KOCHI: Benny Behnan MLA will inaugurate the district-level anti-filariasis drive at the Kakkanad Primary Health Centre on Thursday. District Panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly will preside over the function while DMO R Sudhakaran will deliver the keynote address. There are about 34 lakh people in the district and the Health Department is focusing on distributing medicines to 29 lakh people. The department is striving to achieve the target with the co-operation of various voluntary organisations. About 13,650 volunteers and 1,365 supervisors have been deployed for the purpose. Fifty houses have been put under one volunteer. Reports have shown that the cases of filariasis are increasing in the areas under Kochi Corporation limits. It also showed that the chances for the disease are high in 74 divisions of the corporation area. Apart from it, the coastal stretch from Kollam to Kozhikode is also prone to the disease.
