CHENNAI: Vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan gave a commendable vocal recital, with a classical thrust, showcasing his musical artistry in the concert for the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy. Sustaining Sruti alignment, he began with Mandarai Raga (Janyam of Panthuvarali). His resourcefulness came to the fore when he commenced (Paraloka Bayamuleka) of Thyagarajar, revealing the panthathi of his Padantharam.His Bava-laden music got loaded in Abohi Raga (Sabapathikku) of Gopalakrishna Bharathi, with excellent angling at the niraval at ‘Oru Tharam Siva Chidambaram’ giving a chiseled definition of the kriti.His alluring sketch of Raga ‘Dhanyasi’ (Paradevatha) of Dikshitar that followed, revealed his penchant for ‘Bhava mirroring’.Earlier, he explored the Kannada Raga Kriti (Bhajane Bhaja) of Thyagaraja with complete repose.On the whole, the concert was on the lines of tradition, which he rendered with his usual charm. The concert revealed his penchant in following sampradaya, with his unhurried technique, suiting the kritis.Legendary Umayalpuram Sivaraman (Mridangam), unfolding the laya exposition with Nadai variations, was a treat to watch in the company of Anirudh Athreya (Kanjira). Mullaivasal Chandramouli (Violin) with his usual keenness for mellifluous bowing, swept the audience off their feet.
