CHENNAI: For supporters of Akhilesh Yadav, Saturday was a day to rejoice as he moved from being the prince of the Samajwadi Party to Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, thanks to a decisive mandate. Cut to the prince of the DMK in Tamil Nadu and it was a day when he became the butt of jokes in social networking sites. Twitter and Facebook were abuzz with messages that took a dig at the dynastic race in the Dravidian party, with M K Stalin’s perpetual wait in the succession battle of particular interest to the virtual world. For example, take this tweet posted minutes after Akhilesh’s election as CM and re-tweeted by hundreds: “Karunanidhi must be telling Stalin: I am not so Mulayam-hearted that I would make way for you so soon.” Tweeter @Iamtssudhir marked it with the hashtag “#Alagiriclaps”. Mulayam meaning ‘soft’ in Hindi, it perhaps meant that the DMK patriarch’s heart has not softened enough to pass on the mantle to Stalin.“Stalin will cite Akilesh Yadav, Alagiri will cite Badals. Karuna in trishanku,” said tweeter @NR_Tatvamasi, referring to the spat between the brothers that has remained a headache for the DMK chief in deciding the party’s future. Others suggested that the only way for Stalin to become chief minister with Alagiri around, was to have more than one Tamil Nadu for the family. There were also those who came out in support of Stalin, albeit at the cost of Rahul Gandhi. “Easy way for Karuna’s son to become CM is for Sonia’s son to launch campaign in TN,” said another tweet, indicating the failure of the Congress campaign in UP.Facebook too was rife with caricatures and status updates targeting the father–son duo. One particularly popular photoshopped picture had Stalin citing the retirement of Rahul Dravid from international cricket and asking MK why he was yet to retire, given that his age was more than double Dravid’s. Another popular tweet played with the word ‘Dravid’ and asked Karunanidhi to take note of even “Dravidians” retiring.
