CHENNAI: The civic body polls held for the expanded Chennai Corporation on Monday recorded 48 per cent voter turnout.Speaking to reporters at the end of polling on Monday evening, D Karthikeyan, District Election Officer and Commissioner of Chennai Corporation, said, “In the polls that were by and large peaceful, the city has recorded a voters’ turnout of 48 per cent for the whole of Chennai Corporation.” “Due to altercations, electronic voting machines were partially damaged at four polling booths in Corporation Wards 104 and 107, located at Kilpauk and Purasawalkam and this had led to the suspension of voting after 3 pm,” Karthikeyan said.Repoll would be held at these four booths and the Corporation officials involved in poll duty would submit a report about the incident to the State Election Commission soon, he said.To a question on non-availability of video cameras at all polling booths in the city as ordered by the Madras HC, Karthikeyan said there were initial hitches but everything was sorted out in a short span of time.
