A group of jewellers from North India was allegedly robbed of 12.747 kg of gold on board the Thiruvanathapuram Express on Monday.
Rajasthan native Varadaram alias Vijay (48), a jeweller based in Nethaji Nagar, Sowkarpet in Chennai, visited Coimbatore two days back with his assistants Madan Singh and Jijendar Singh to purchase some jewels. Later, they boarded the Thiruvananthapuram Express to Chennai at 2.55 am, carrying with them two suitcases containing 12.747 kg of gold said to be worth around `4.5 crore.
The suitcases were apparently bound to a seat with an iron chain.
Early on Monday, when the train reached Jolarpet, the suitcases were nowhere to be found.
The jeweller subsequently approached the railway police, who asked them to lodge a complaint with Salem railway police.
Later, following an inquiry, Erode inspector Veerammal took them to Coimbatore for further investigations.
