Made in Abyss Chronological Watch Order
Made in Abyss - Season 1 (2017)The good thing about watchingMade in Abyss in chronological order is that it really isn’t all that complicated! The show and movies were released in chronological order—which means season 1 of the show, released in 2017, is the place to start. It includes 13 episodes, each around 20 minutes long, so it’s not at all difficult to get through, either.
Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn (2019)Journey’s Dawn is actually optional, because it’s a movie recapping episodes 1-8 of Made in Abyss’s first season. You can watch it if you like, but if you’re choosing between Journey’s Dawn of the show, we’d recommend the show—you’re getting a more intense and impactful experience that way!
Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight (2019)LikeJourney’s Dawn, Wandering Twilight is also totally optional; it’s a condensed movie recap of season one, episodes 9-12. If you want the full Made in Abyss experience, you can watch these two movies and season one, but otherwise, you can choose one or the other.
Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul (2020)Unlike the previous two movies,Dawn of the Deep Soul isn’t a recap—it’s a movie set after the events of Made in Abyss season one, following the three Cave Raiders as they delve further into the Abyss. More importantly, it’s also wholly original content, making it essential to your Made in Abyss watch.
Made in Abyss - Season 2 (2022)Made in Abyss’s season two—titled The Golden City of the Scorching Sun—follows Riko’s arrival in the sixth layer of the Abyss, and the ruins of the Golden City. Upon arrival, they encounter creatures called Hollows and investigate the city’s dark origins. This season consists of 12 episodes and was released in 2022. There are flashbacks throughout seasons one and two, taking place before the events of the series. If you want to watch Made in Abyss in completely chronological order, watch the flashbacks first! However, that’s not recommended for first-time viewers, since it’ll spoil some major reveals later on. Here are the flashbacks in chronological order: MiA - Season 2, episode 1, part 1 MiA - Season 2, episode 3, part 2 MiA - Season 2, episode 7 (whole episode) MiA - Season 2, episode 8, part 2 MiA - Season 1, episode 2, part 2 MiA - Season 1, episode 8, part 3 MiA - Season 1, episode 13, part 1

What to Know About Made in Abyss
Made in Abyss is an anime combining dark fantasy and science fiction. In the show, the Abyss is an unfathomably deep hole filled with layers of strange creatures, monsters, danger, mystery, and ancient artifacts. A young orphan, Riko, lives near the edge of the Abyss and dreams of delving to the very bottom to find her mother; thus, she becomes a Cave Raider-in-training and ventures forth with a small group of friends. Riko’s fellow adventurers include Reg, a being who claims to come from the Abyss itself, as well as Nanachi, a former human whose body was warped by the Curse of the Abyss.
The series started as a manga, created by Akihito Tsukushi. It was originally published in Web Comic Gamma before being adapted into an anime series. And, although the main characters in the show are kids, it’s definitely not a show for kids; Made in Abyss is actually rated for mature audiences due to its dark and disturbing themes (not to mention violence, gore, and body horror). Made in Abyss is targeted to young adults (generally ages 16/17+)
Are the Made in Abyss movies canon?
Yes, the Made in Abyss movies are considered canon. Many anime movies stray from the series’ canon (like most of the films in franchises like Naruto, One Piece, and Dragon Ball), featuring original stories that expand the universe without affecting the main story. However, that isn’t the case with Dawn of the Deep Soul, Wandering Twilight, or Journey’s Dawn. DotDS canonically takes place between seasons one and two, while JD and WT recap the events of season one. Other popular anime franchises have started to release canon movies, too—like Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia.
