What to Know About Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss is an anime combining dark fantasy and science fiction. In the show, the Abyss is an unfathomably deep hole filled with layers of strange creatures, monsters, danger, mystery, and ancient artifacts. A young orphan, Riko, lives near the edge of the Abyss and dreams of delving to the very bottom to find her mother; thus, she becomes a Cave Raider-in-training and ventures forth with a small group of friends. Riko’s fellow adventurers include Reg, a being who claims to come from the Abyss itself, as well as Nanachi, a former human whose body was warped by the Curse of the Abyss.

The series started as a manga, created by Akihito Tsukushi. It was originally published in Web Comic Gamma before being adapted into an anime series. And, although the main characters in the show are kids, it’s definitely not a show for kids; Made in Abyss is actually rated for mature audiences due to its dark and disturbing themes (not to mention violence, gore, and body horror).
