Restart your phone.
Restarting can clear temporary glitches. Your software can glitch to activate RTT for calls even if you've turned it off. If you have an Android, press and hold the side button and then drag the slider to power off your phone. Press the side button again to turn it back on. If you have an iPhone, press and hold the side button and a volume button, drag the slider to power off your phone, and then press the side button again to turn your phone on. For iPhones with a Home button, press and hold the side button, drag the slider to power off, and then press the side button again to turn it back on.
Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
One can be glitching and turning on RTT. If you're using Wi-Fi, turn it off to use cellular data. Alternatively, if you're connected to something using Bluetooth, disable that connection and turn it off. You'll find the Wi-Fi icon and Bluetooth icons in the Quick Settings panel on Android and in Control Center on iPhone. Tap the icons to turn those features off.
See if the other person is using RTT.
Although you might not have RTT on, the other person can. In that case, RTT will seemingly turn on randomly for one caller and no one else. There's no way to turn off RTT if the other caller is using it.
Update your phone's software.
Out-of-date software can cause RTT to turn on by itself. Stay bug-free by keeping your phone up-to-date! If your phone is too old to update, you might need to buy a new phone to keep RTT disabled. For Android, go to Settings > System > System update > Download/Install. For iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Download/Install.
Check third-party dialers.
Alternative dialers can have RTT settings on. If you have an alternative dialer that you downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store, turn off RTT inside that app's settings, or uninstall the app.
Delete RTT calls from call history.
Deleting calls might cancel RTT settings. Users on reddit claim that doing this works for both iPhone and Android. Open your Phone app, click the History tab, and delete calls that have the RTT symbol next to them (it looks like a phone receiver over a grid of squares). Here are more detailed steps to do this in Android and here's how to delete calls from call history on iPhone. The RTT settings should be erased and no longer activate in calls.
