Steps

Click the "Insert" tab.

You'll see this tab at the top of your Word document. It'll be between the "Home" and "Page Layout" tabs.

Click the "Page Number" menu.

You'll see this option in the "Header & Footer" section. A list of page number options will expand.

Choose a page numbering position.

Select either Top of Page or Bottom of Page. This is your choice- you can also select other options, but these two are most common.

Choose one of the page numbering schemes.

Click the desired page numbering option. Your page numbers will instantly appear in your document. If you need to choose some custom number formatting, such as not adding a "1" to the cover page of your document, return to Insert > Page Number and click Format Page Numbers.
