Jonas Olsson gave West Bromwich Albion a 1-0 victory at Manchester United on Saturday that should ensure the team stays in the English Premier League.
But a third successive loss for United has seen their grip on fourth place loosened, with Liverpool only four points behind in the race for Champions League qualification.
"It's difficult because when you are attacking all of the match and when you are not scoring, then it is very disappointing," United manager Louis Gaal said. "I (have) seen a team that fights till the end, that attacks 90 minutes. And one free kick is enough to beat us.
"You can also say we were a little bit unlucky, but that is not enough. You have to score out of your possibilities. The chances today were great enough for me."
Chris Brunt's free kick was deflected into the net by Olsson in the 63rd minute as West Brom won at Old Trafford for a second successive season.
West Brom are seven points clear of the relegation zone with three games to go.
"We knew it was going to be difficult but everyone defended for their lives," said West Brom midfielder Darren Fletcher, who left United earlier this year. "It was fantastic. We frustrated them. We always believed we'd score off a chance or set-piece. Thankfully, that worked today."
