Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen, who collapsed mid-game against Finland on Saturday at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen has been shifted to a hospital where he is undergoing further treatments, the Danish FA has confirmed.
The incident happened on the 42nd minute when Denmark won a thrown in Finland’s half and Christian Eriksen rushed to receive the ball but he collapsed face first as the ball hit his knee.
Understanding the severity of the incident, referee Anthony Taylor and a couple of Danish players urged the medical staff to come immediately. Meanwhile, other players including Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel also rushed towards Eriksen as he laid on the ground. Denmark captain Simon Kjaer, before the medics got there, he secured his neck, cleared the airways and started CPR.
After receiving treatment for over 10 minutes, Eriksen was stretchered off the ground by the medical staff. During those 10 minutes, players from both sides were seen distraught and they were praying for the 29-year-old’s well being. The Danish players also surrounded Christian Eriksen to prevent cameras from capturing those horrific pictures. The previously raucous crowd at stadium also fell silent.
After television pictures showed Danish players in tears as medical staff tried to revive the Inter Milan player, a Reuters photographer at the game saw Eriksen raise his hand as he was carried from the pitch on a stretcher. Later, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano too confirmed that Eriksen was conscious when he was stretchered off.
