Aguero hoping to be fit before crucial Arsenal tie

Manchester: Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is battling to be fit for this weekend's Premier League clash at Arsenal after suffering a "stupid" foot injury last week, the club website said on Wednesday.

The Argentine missed last Saturday's 3-3 home draw with Sunderland and the previous game against Stoke City, which helped Manchester United stretch their lead over their local rivals to five points with seven games left.

"It's hard to believe it happened while we are fighting for the title," Aguero said of his injury. "This is the real status of my injury. I got back from practice today and it's not bothering me. If it all goes well, I'll be at coach's disposal on Sunday. This is no time for moping. I've said it before and I'll say it again - we are going to fight until the end. That's our collective goal and I'm fully committed to it."

City boss Roberto Mancini labelled topscorer Aguero's injury "stupid" last week and refused to go into details, but it emerged the forward had suffered boils after using a spray on an ankle problem.

"During the match against Chelsea, I injured my ankle and it was sprayed with a topical anaesthetic that caused a burn on the upper part of my right foot," Aguero said on his official website.

"The injury worsened after a few days and when boils appeared, I was told I wouldn't play against Stoke and then against Sunderland. You can imagine how I felt, being out of playing condition when my team is trying to take the championship. It's always worse from the bench."

"After that I started receiving incredible rumours about how it all happened. I know my life is very public and I'm willing to take criticism even if I disagree with it. but I will not sit quietly while lies are being spread - even more so if they cast doubt upon my professionalism. This is a simple injury and not a plot of intrigue."

Aguero, meanwhile, has not given up hope of mega-rich City overhauling champions United. "Why wait until next season if there is still a possibility we can win it now?" he told www.mcfc.co.uk. "We all want to make it and though it won't be easy, we believe we can win the Premier League this season."

"Winning titles is about never giving up and we will never give up. I want to win it this season and then many more with City after that."
