Billionaire Elon Musk is known for his maverick business ideas and unique style of functioning. In his career of several decades, Musk has founded several successful companies including Tesla Motors, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company and social media platform X. Musk’s focus on innovation and problem-solving has made him one of the richest people in the world. Tech enthusiasts from across the globe aspire to work for his companies. So what does it take to be an employee at Musk’s companies?
Elon Musk has had a very distinct view on hiring. Speaking at the WSJ CEO Summit in 2020 Musk had said “I think that there might be too many MBAs running companies,” as quoted by CNBC.
He added that a big problem in corporate America is the presence of too many MBA graduates and that having management training may not be an advantage when he hires.
Musk feels MBA graduates are mostly involved with spreadsheets, presentations, and numbers, and offer little vision.
Earlier, a Fortune report explained Elon Musk’s hiring criteria for his social media company X. According to the report, Musk follows a six-step approach to hiring people.
– Hiring-related vacancies for X are not announced on any job portals. The company has its own job board. Therefore, information about the vacancies in X is not available on LinkedIn or other job sites.
-In the application process, candidates are required to mention the extraordinary work that they have done in the past. For example, candidates do not have to just say that they have worked at Google. Instead, the candidate has to explain how they have increased the company’s revenue by launching an important update in Google Ads.
-If an application is selected, the candidate will be contacted for an interview. After this, there will be a technical screening and an on-site interview.
-The interview does not follow a pre-determined script since X is a company that does not like red tape or bureaucracy.
-Elon Musk revealed that the candidate needs to be creative enough and not just focus on changing the colours of the button. They need to show creativity in solving problems.
-Another important point that Elon Musk mentioned for the hiring process in his companies is that he gives preference to candidates who do not have a history of being fired from their past jobs.
