The Punjab Kings could be on the lookout for a new coach ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, with the franchise unlikely to renew Trevor Bayliss’ contract after his two-year stint.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, it is suggested that the franchise could be on the lookout for an Indian coach to take over the role. Among the notable candidates include Sanjay Bangar who was the head coach in 2015 and 2016 and currently holds the post of Director of Cricket for the franchise.
The Punjab-based franchise was supposed to decide on July 22. However, the meeting has not taken place and it is believed that they would like to widen their search for the new Head Coach.

The report also claims that the franchise might not have qualms regarding his coaching style but the results have not been up to par. In the last two seasons, PBKS has finished at eighth and ninth positions in the points table and the last time they qualified for the playoffs was in 2014 when they finished at the top of the table.
Bayliss was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders coaching set-up which under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir managed to win the title in 2012 and 2014. However, he has not been able to replicate any form of success within the Punjab setup.
With his future with the franchise uncertain, it remains to be seen who will be his replacement. Among the available big names include Rahul Dravid who recently ended his stint as the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. The franchise could look to rope in the former Indian cricketer.

The Punjab Kings have blown a hot-cold season during the previous two years and have looked far from title contenders despite having several big-name stars in their roster.
The franchise could look to make a fresh start with a new coach at the helm to overturn their fortunes as they continue their pursuit of that maiden title. With a new leader, a new vision and a new set of players, the franchise could be on the up if they play out their cards right.
