PM hopes that national highway development programme would bring prosperity to all regions that it touches.

Mahaboobnagar: Underpinning the need for high-class infrastructure for India's progress, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hoped on Thursday that the national highway development programme would bring prosperity to all regions that it touches.

The four-lane highway would also bring fortune as it passes through the region (Andhra Pradesh), he said after laying the foundation stone for the four-lane highway at Kothakota mandal.

"We have expanded the road programme, which costs Rs 2,20,000 crore, and a vast majority of it is being built with public-private partnership", Singh said.

"In addition to roads, we have also begun work on new railway projects, airports and ports", he said.

The whopping Rs 2,20,000 crore for infrastructure development was unimaginable a few years back, he said, adding that the majority of the projects are being executed on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.

Lauding the progress being made in Andhra Pradesh, Singh said the state was a major beneficiary with all the initiatives and new facilities coming up rapidly.

He said Andhra Pradesh was an important state for the UPA Government and "we will give all necessary assistance for its rapid progress."

Earlier, Singh visited a photo exhibition at the venue, showcasing various irrigation projects and welfare schemes of the state.

He also handed over cheques, worth Rs 52.66 crore, to 9,253 self-help groups.

In the National Highway Development Project (NHDP) Phase II, covering about 773 km passing through Andhra Pradesh, 310 kms falls under Nagpur- yderabad section while 463 km run to Bangalore-Hyderabad section of National Highway-7.

About 46 km four-land road has already been laid and work was in progress in about 229 km while work is to be taken up in the remaining 701 km.
