The police are also distributing 800 alcometers for checking drunk driving and 155 laser speed guns across the state, excluding Bengaluru.

Starting July 1, the entire Bengaluru-Mysuru Road network will be equipped with the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), according to Alok Kumar, ADGP for Traffic and Road Safety in Karnataka.

The ITMS, first launched in Bengaluru in December 2022, includes 250 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and 80 red light violation detection (RLVD) cameras at 50 key junctions. This technology helps in detecting traffic violations and improving road safety.

The ITMS has now expanded to Mysuru with ANPR cameras installed on major roads at a cost of Rs 8.5 crore. Mysuru city received Rs 4 crore, and the district region received Rs 4.5 crore. From July 1, traffic violators in Mysuru will start receiving challans.

“The cameras will monitor several areas including Hunsur, HD Kote, Nanjangud, and T Narasipur. We have set up a Traffic Management Centre in Mysuru, and will soon start sending real-time SMS alerts to violators,” said Alok Kumar to Deccan Herald.

The ADGP also plans to extend ITMS to four major highways connecting Bengaluru: Tumakuru Road (NH 4), Kanakapura Road (NH 948), Hosur Road (NH 44), and NH 75. These highways will also feature Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) to inform drivers about real-time traffic conditions and road events.

More cameras and VMS boards are also planned for the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway. The state road transport authority has approved the proposal, and tenders will be issued in July.

In a meeting on June 1, the state police’s traffic and road safety wing discussed integrating the challan system with FASTag at toll gates. This would enable direct deduction of traffic fines from the FASTag wallet. The ADGP plans to write to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for approval.

Alongside cameras, the police are investing in signboards, blinkers, 800 alcometers for checking drunk driving, and 155 laser speed guns to enhance road safety across Karnataka, excluding Bengaluru.
