Planning to get a driving license? If yes, there are some latest updates in the rules, which is important to know before applying for one. It has been reported that the new driving license rules will come into effect from June 1, 2024, simplifying the process and eliminating the big queues at the Regional Transport Office or Road Transport Office (RTO).
Changes in Driving Licence Rules
As per the details shared by the concerned department, now the applicants do not have to take the driving test directly at the RTO. Instead, the government has authorized private driving schools, giving them the right to conduct these tests and help the public in obtaining a driving license.
Driving License Test at Private School
Now, the private schools will conduct all the driving license physical tests, deleting the role of RTO offices in the process. After the test, the private entity officials will analyze the applicants, and after getting satisfactory results, a certification will be issue that can be used as a driver’s license. This works for a limited time until the physical copy reaches their given address.
The authority has been given to private schools for the same to reduce the long lines at the RTO offices, allowing the applicants to get the work done faster.
How to Apply for New Driving Licence
Good news! There is no change in applying for driving licenses. Even the process will become simpler. Now, it will take less paperwork to obtain a driving license. Here are some steps that will help to get the license faster online.
Step-by-Step Application Process
- All the applicants are advised to visit the official RTO website and then click on “Driving Licence Related Services”.
- Once done, the page will redirect to the Sarathi portal.
- Select your city or state from the list below, and click on the option “Apply for Learner’s Licence”.
- Fill in all the details, upload the required documents, and pay an online fee to get the test slot.
- Visit the Sarathi website again. Click on “Apply for DL”, and submit the DL application under the option that reads “Holding Learner’s Licence”.
- Pay the DL fees online.
- download the confirmation slip and visit the selected city or state RTO official on the scheduled date.
Driving License Cost Under New Rules
- The learner’s license renewal fee set at Rs 200.
- An international license costs Rs 1,000.
- Permanent licence at Rs 200.
- Permanent licence renewal fee Rs 200.
- Issue of renewed driver’s license Rs 200.
- Addition of another class of vehicle to driving license Rs 500.
- Endorsement or renewal of authorization for vehicles carrying hazardous goods Rs 1,000.
- Updation of address in license cost Rs 200.
New Update in Challan Policy
The government has also updated the challan rules in the country. If anyone is caught driving without license, they will be fined as high as Rs 2,000. For the minor, the fine amount has been set at Rs 25,000, three years of imprisonment, action against the parents, or cancellation of vehicle registration for 1 year.
