New Delhi: Almost 8 million people have been affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal that killed nearly 7,000 people and 1.7 million children are in urgent need of aid in the worst-hit areas.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) data, some 14,357 people have been injured due to the powerful temblor out of which 7,000 are children.
The 7.9-magnitude Saturday earthquake, the country's worst in over eight decades, completely damaged 1,43,673 houses and partially damaged 1,60,786 other homes. The massive earthquake in Nepal has destroyed 5,000 schools too. The disaster has left 3,50,000 people homeless of which 1,40,000 are children.
Around 1.7 million children are in urgent need of health assistance and 1.4 million require urgent food assistance. 1, 26,000 children between 6 to 23 months need nutritious food and 70,000 children between 6 to 59 months with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) need supplementary food. 15,000 children between 6 to 59 months with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) need therapeutic feeding.
3,62,000 children aged between 6 to 59 months need Vitamin A, micronutrient supplements and deworming. 1,85,000 women (including pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers) need Vitamin A, micronutrient supplements and deworming.
The reports said almost 2.8 million people have been displaced due to the quake.
Almost 1,26,000 pregnant women and 2 million girls of reproductive age have been affected by the devastating earthquake. The affected 21,000 pregnant women will need obstetric care in the coming three months.
Protections for women and girls from gender-based violence and other threats will also be critical. 40,000 women are at immediate risk of sexual and gender based violence.
4.2 million people including 1.68 million children are in need of clean water for various purposes.
