Russian Plane Carrying 30 Passengers Lands On Frozen River By Mistake
A Russian plane with 30 passengers mistakenly landed on the frozen Kolyma River due to an error by the pilot.

In an unusual turn of events, a Russian plane with 30 passengers mistakenly landed on the frozen surface of the Kolyma River in the country’s Far East. The incident was attributed to a pilot error, leading the aircraft to touch down on the icy expanse. This region is particularly known for its frigid climate and sub-zero temperatures. Shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), a video and multiple images depicting the aftermath, showed the stranded passengers struggling.

As reported by the BBC, flight YAP217, which took off from Yakutsk, the capital of the Sakha Republic in Russia’s Far East, on December 28, faced an unexpected landing incident. The aircraft, identified as an An-24, was originally bound for Zyryanka, located 1,100 kilometres to the northeast. Subsequently, it was scheduled to reach Srednekolymsk before completing its journey back to Yakutsk.

As the plane approached Zyryanka airport, it deviated from the runway, ultimately landing on a sandbank in the Kolyma River, as reported by the BBC. A visible snow trail illustrated the distance covered by the aircraft before coming to a stop on the frozen surface of the river.

“According to preliminary information, the cause of the aviation incident was an error by the crew in piloting the aircraft,” a spokesperson for the Eastern Siberian transport prosecutor said in a statement, as mentioned in the caption of one of the posts shared on December 28.

The incident involved 30 passengers and four crew members. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as indicated in a press release from the Russian airline.

The Federal Air Transport Agency’s territorial department has initiated an investigation into the matter to ascertain the circumstances leading to the unintentional landing.

In other news, a peculiar moment was captured on camera by a passenger on a plane in San Francisco when another aircraft flying over the Golden Gate Bridge appeared to be suspended in the air, creating an optical illusion of it hanging without movement. The video, initially shared on Reddit, was resurfaced on the internet. While some speculated that the plane was defying aviation laws, experts clarified that the phenomenon occurred due to the intricate interplay of headwinds and tailwinds during the plane’s journey. Tailwinds propel the plane forward, while headwinds create resistance, assisting in slowing it down.
