'Pray That I Don’t Poison My Family’: German Woman Tries Homemade Jam From 1996

Most of us cannot even imagine finding an intact jar of jam that is 27 years old. However, a German woman recently tasted a jam that was made by her grandmother decades ago. The woman, named Georgiana, found this jam in her grandparents’ cellar in Germany. The jar was sealed tightly. Georgiana decided to taste this jam alongside her two siblings. In a video, she mentions that she was two years old when this jam was made in 1996. She then tries hard to open the tightly sealed jar. Once it is open, she takes a tiny bit and tries it. Then, her brothers try the apple jam and all three agree that it tastes good.

While sharing this video, Georgiana wrote, “Eating jam from 1996? Ok. Found in my grandparents’ cellar in Germany, this is 27+ years old… so almost as old as me! Let’s try it and pray that I don’t poison my family.” This video has over 69,000 likes since it was posted on January 10.

Commenting on the jar’s super tight seal, an Instagram user wrote, “Seeing how hard it was to open, it would have lasted another 27 years.” An Instagram user said, “Sugar is great at preserving stuff! I tried some biscuits from an emergency raft that were labelled 1982, and tasted just fine.”

In response to such comments, another person wrote, “I do want you all to know that it was a combination of a high acid environment combined with a vacuum that preserved this apple – not sugar. The average % of sugar in a jam or jelly is about 40%-50%, and sugar doesn’t start acting as a preservative until around 80%, unlike salt which can start preserving at around 3%!”

People also spoke about how they have tried old jams and jellies made by their grandparents. An Instagram user recalled, “I found marmalade my grandma made in the 80’s. It was still good. So happy she taught me her canning technique.” Another person said, “Once found plum jam from 1988 in my parent’s cellar (meaning it even moved with them). Was still fine when I opened it a few years ago.”

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), an unopened jar of jam can be stored in a cool and dry place for up to 12 months. However, it should be refrigerated and consumed within six months after opening the seal.
