The rising cost of living is a challenge faced by many around the world and Canada is no different. A recent viral video features an Indian tech worker in Toronto and despite earning around $100,000 annually (approximately Rs 62 lakh), she finds it difficult to survive in the Canadian city. Working as a test lead at TD Bank, with over ten years of experience, she spoke about how inflation has affected her life.
For example, she pointed out that the price of butter has skyrocketed and doubled in just three years. Her opinion has garnered mixed reactions online. While some believe her salary is enough for a single individual, others support her, claiming various factors, such as personal and unexpected expenses can affect her financial situation.
In the video, when asked if she planned to settle in Canada forever, the woman said, “I don’t think anybody answers yes to that anymore. A couple of years and probably move somewhere closer to home.”
Speaking about the money she makes, she replied, “Not that, much given the current economy and I was an internal transfer with my company, so I make just little less than $100,000. In Toronto, it’s not easy to live with that sort of money, it’s really bad. It’s become so expensive, I came here three years back. It’s a very basic example, even a slab of butter costs $4 (approximately Rs 250), its $8 (approximately Rs 500) now. So inflation is very real. It doesn’t hit you like that in India, but here, it’s just so real. So I have a two bedroom, 2 washroom unit, I rent the master bedroom, I pay around $1600 (approximately Rs 99,000) just for the room.”
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “95k should be enough for one person. A lot of people are earning less than that in Toronto.”
Another shared, “Most of these people come here for 5 years and say o it’s hard. Our parents have been here for 30 years worked for $5hr in the 80s, 6.85 in the 90s finally now they are settled. In summary it’s a journey. Don’t expect to be set in 5 years.”
“My first job was $5 an hour in a bakery shop riding buses and living in room. She has just came here through offshore company making 100k as test lead and still complaining. I had no car no friends just a back pack and determination,” a comment read.
An individual shared, “Living in Toronto is not the same as living in Delhi/Mumbai, not everyone can make it here, and it’s still a dream of many.”
One more added, “She is so real, and I dropped to come to Ontario 2 years ago. It’s really difficult to buy a home even with both partners earning 100k each.”
Since the video was shared on Instagram, it has garnered over 12 Lakh views.
