The heart-warming reunion of two childhood best friends separated during the India-Pakistan partition in 1947 went viral on social media. The two friends grew up together in Deesa, Gujarat and were separated in 1947, when they were around 12 years old. A video of their heartfelt reunion has garnered a lot of love on the internet.

After being separated in 1947, they managed to briefly reconnect in 1982 in New York with the help of a mutual friend. However, it was not until October 2023 that they would meet again.

Megan Kothari, 32, documented the whole episode of reuniting her grandfather Suresh Kothari with his childhood best friend, AG Shakir in the US in October 2023. A video of the reunion was shared on an Instagram page, ‘Brownhistory’.

“When his friend reached Pakistan in 1947, he wrote to my grandfather that he had reached and shared his address in Rawalpindi (which to this day my grandfather has memorized). They tried to write to each other over the years, but the tensions between the two countries eventually made it impossible,” Megan Kothari wrote in the caption.

In the video, the two friends were seen shaking hands before hugging and spending the evening together.

“The love and respect they still held for each other, despite the geographical and political barriers that had separated them, is profound. It serves as a powerful reminder that the power of human connection can not be extinguished by any government or border,” the caption of the video read.

Megan further said that they hope to be reunited at her grandfather’s 90th birthday in April 2024 in New Jersey.
