Among upcoming video games, the award-winning "Gone Home" and "The Banner Saga" get console releases, while Capcom's monster hunting "Dragon's Dogma" goes the other way to PC.
From independent studios we have debuts for "Oxenfree," an island party that turns into a missing persons hunt, and a message of faith, hope and love from "That Dragon, Cancer."
1. Gone Home (PlayStation 4, Xbox One)
January 12
Step into the shoes of Kate Greenbriar who, after time abroad, comes back to an apparently abandoned family home. Then begins the process of discovering what fate befell Kate's sister and parents during her absence. First released in 2013 to widespread critical acclaim, the title nonetheless generated no small controversy for its interpretation of video game standards.
2. The Banner Saga (PS4, XBO)
January 12
Tundra-navigating Viking migration story meets feature-grade animated artwork and turn-based tactical combat in one of 2014's most well-praised debuts. Previously released on Mac, PC, Android and iPad, a sequel is expected later this year.
3. That Dragon, Cancer (Mac, Ouya, Windows PC)
January 12
A two-hour excursion through the life of Joel Green and family; Joel's father created this game during and after his young son's four-year fight against cancer. Also the subject of documentary film "Thank You For Playing," shown at Tribeca, IDFA, Hot Docs, and other festival circuit venues.
4. Tharsis (PS4, WinPC)
January 12
Strap in for a seat on the first manned mission to Mars, in search of a signal sent from one of its equatorial regions. Problem is, a meteor storm has battered your spaceship and now it's up to you to keep your surviving crew alive, sane, or at least capable of landing on the red planet.
5. Oxenfree (WinPC, XBO)
January 15
Set against the turmoil of a family remarriage and the anniversary of a friend's passing, Alex, her new stepbrother Jonas, and a couple of friends head out to a coastal island for good times and a spot of light paranormal investigation. Things get serious when their portable radio picks up strange broadcasts and people start to go missing.
6. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (WinPC)
January 15
Coming over to PC after the action adventuring of "Dragon's Dogma" first debuted on consoles back in 2012, this conversion is of the "Dark Arisen" edition which added several tweaks and improvements to the original, as well as a new area to explore. A well-received blend of Capcom own's successful "Monster Hunter" know-how with the trend for Japanese-developed medieval fantasy settings.
