Clubhouse, the audio-based chat platform, has gained massive popularity in the last few weeks, but sadly, the application is currently limited to iOS devices. It appears that the app will come to Android users this year, though it will still take a “couple of months." In its weekly Townhall event on Sunday, Clubhouse co-founder Paul Davison remarked (via TechCrunch) that the company was working “really hard" to come to Android, though the exact availability date remains unclear. Recently, a security researcher at Ireland-based ESET spotted a fake Clubhouse API for Android smartphones containing a trojan – nicknamed “BlackRock." The malware seemingly gains unauthorised login credentials from more than 450 apps and can bypass SMS-based two-factor authentication. In a blog post, the researcher had stated that the malicious package is served from a website that has the look and feel of the genuine Clubhouse website. The website essentially allows users to download the Android Package Kit or APK file. Facebook and Twitter are also coming up with their own version of Clubhouse.
During the town hall meeting, Davison also stated that Clubhouse is also developing more tools to help content creators on its platform. The company is planning on ways to help creators increase their audience reach and also monetise the events they hold on the audio-only social platform. The executive also spoke of dropping Clubhouse’s invite-only status as something it hopes to do in the coming months. “It is going to be really important that we just open up to everyone," Davison said. “Android is going to be really important. Localisation is obviously going to be very important," he added.
Meanwhile, Twitter has said that its Clubhouse-rival Twitter Spaces will go live for all its users by April. In late February, Twitter was testing the feature with 1,000 users that began with women and people from marginalised groups. Instant messaging platform Telegram also updated its Voice Chat feature recently, which brought Clubhouse-like features such as title, raise a hand, and more.
