Streaming Now: Celebrate Women's Day with Bombay Begums and The Married Woman

This week’s highlights on streaming platforms revolve around International Women’s Day, being celebrated on Monday, March 8. Pooja Bhatt is returning to acting with Netflix’s Bombay Begums, which explores the dreams and desires of five women from different strata of society as they fight for survival in Mumbai.

Ekta Kapoor is producing The Married Woman, starring Riddhi Dogra and Monica Dogra, a series based on celebrated author Manju Kapur’s bestseller novel called A Married Woman. The series shows a woman’s journey of self-discovery, set against the background of love and turmoil filled social fabric.

Bombay Begums (Netflix)

Bombay Begums revolves around five women from Mumbai, who are connected by “ambition, desire, struggle for power and vulnerability”. It traces their journey as they fight obstacles in their careers and relationships, while challenging societal norms. Director Alankrita Sirvastava has said, “It’s the story of glass ceilings shattered, and also of the hearts broken in the process. I have tried to create a world that reflects the realities of urban working women.” The show stars Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Plabita Borthakur, Amruta Subhash, Aadhya Anand, Rahul Bose, Vivek Gomber, Danish Husain and Nauheed Cyrusi.

‘The Married Woman’ is an urban, relationship drama about women and their conditioning levied by society and her search to find herself. ‘The Married Woman’, directed by Sahir Raza, is an urban relationship drama about women and their conditioning levied by society and her search to find herself. Set amidst the backdrop of Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, The Married Woman is a story of Peeplika Khan and Astha Kalra, who are on their journey to find themselves. When these two souls meet, they instantly realise that they have found a piece of the missing puzzle. The show directed by Sahir Raza features Ridhi Dogra and Monica Dogra as the central characters. It also features notable actors including Imaad Shah, Ayesha Raza, Rahul Vohra, Divya Seth Shah, Nadira Babbar, and Suhaas Ahuja, among others. The series will start streaming on March 8.

Moxie (Netflix)

Inspired by her mom’s rebellious past and a confident new friend, a shy 16-year-old publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school. Patriarchy sucks. Rebel girls are cool. She’s taking a stand, finding her voice — and sparking a revolution at school. This comedy-drama film is directed by Amy Poehler from an adapted screenplay from the 2015 novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu. It stars Hadley Robinson, Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Nico Hiraga, Sydney Park, Josephine Langford, Clark Gregg, Ike Barinholtz, Poehler, and Marcia Gay Harden.

Women of Honour: Destination Army (Disney+ Hotstar)

Destination Army follows two lady cadets through their journey at the Officer’s Training Academy over a rigorous 6 month period. The cadets transform and transcend themselves through a rigorous process of mental and physical training to become officers of the Indian Army. The 44-minute special chronicles the tale of the cadets at the esteemed institute of Officers Training Academy, Chennai. With an aim to break society-stereotypes, the film captures how empowered women transform and transcend themselves through a rigorous process of mental, physical and weapon training, drills, tactics, intellectual development and leadership training to become Army Officers.

Coming 2 America (Amazon Prime Video)

Murphy is back as the Prince Akeem of Zamunda in Coming 2 America, the sequel to 1988’s wildly successful comedy Coming to America. The story takes place three decades after the original. Akeem has three daughters now but no son to pass his throne to. His dying father, the King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), informs him of a bastard son he conceived in Queens, New York during a one-night stand. He leaves for America to bring back his son, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler).
