Chennai: J Jayalalithaa’s swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the sixth time on Monday had an unexpected and special guest. He was none other than DMK’s de-facto chief MK Stalin.
Breaking away from the tradition of the main opposition party boycotting the swearing-in of the chief minister, Stalin made his appearance at the Madras University Centenary hall in Chennai on Monday morning.
Both DMK and AIADMK workers and leaders thought that this rare gesture would end animosity between the Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi camps.
However their hope was short-lived. Stalin was made to sit in one of the back rows instead of the front row reserved for leaders of his stature.
Stalin is most likely to be appointed as the leader of opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly. He is also leading a strong opposition contingent with 98 MLAs.
This “ill treatment” of his favourite son seems to have upset DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. In a statement he attacked Jayalalithaa saying that she will never reform.
He said that offering a front row seat to actor Sharathkumar and forcing Stalin to sit in one of the back rows reveals Jaya’s vindictive nature.
So far Stalin has not said anything about the treatment meted out to him at Jayalalithaa’s swearing-in.
