J&K: Curfew imposed in Rajouri, Jammu as tensions escalate
Police and army are patrolling the streets of Kishtwar and the government has now ordered shoot at the sight orders.

Srinagar: Curfew has been imposed in Rajouri and Jammu districts since Saturday night after tensions escalated. According to sources, the curfew was called after certain untoward incidents took place at New Plot and Gujjar Nagar on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, curfew imposed in Kishtwar earlier continues as the situation still remains tense. A violent clash in Kishtwar left two dead and injured at least 30 over two days.

"Some leaders are just polarising the situation. They have their vested interests and they try to exploit the situation every time," said a local..

"We call the police, complain to the army about them. But the administration continues to fail us" said another local.

Five hundred additional troops have been deployed to help the army that was brought in on Friday. The state government has said they will not allow the violence to flare up again.

"We will not allow any individual or organisation to heighten tensions in the area again," said Ali Mohammad Sagar, J&K Rural Development Minister.

Even as the violence has come under control, tensions remain high in the area as bodies of the two dead were given to their relatives for the last rites. The state government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident, but that hasn't stopped the Opposition from taking potshots.

"The government did not impsoe a curfew for 9 hours when the riots started. They could have prevented further violence. Two people wouls not have lost their lives," said GM Saroori, Congress MLA.

"The government should have been alert about the rising tensions in the area, but they did nothing and allowed the situation to worsen," Naeen Akhtar, PDP spokesperson.

Meanwhile, police and army are patrolling the streets of Kishtwar and the government has now ordered shoot at sight orders. There was no incident on Sunday in Kishtwar, which could be seen as some relief even if the situation continues to remain grim.
