New Delhi: After Yashwant Sinha, senior BJP leader Ram Jethmalani on Tuesday endorsed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the party's prime ministerial candidate in the upcoming general election.
Jethmalani also went to an extent to term Modi as '100 per cent secular'.
"Modi in my definition of secularism is 100 per cent secular and his enemies have done their best to spread wrong news about him and at time provide false documents as well," Jethmalani said.
"I have always told BJP to announce their PM candidate. This is not good that people come to know about the prime ministerial candidate after the polls" he added.
Meanwhile, NDA ally Shiv Sena is now putting its weight behind Suhsma Swaraj. Senior Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said that the party is keen on Suhsma.
"This is their internal matter. Who will the PM candidate for BJP will be decided by the BJP party. As for PM candidate for the NDA, that will be discussed at the NDA meeting. Sushma Swaraj always had the blessings of Balasaheb. As for Narendra Modi, Balasaheb always gave his blessings to him but as for leading the country, Balasaheb was clear that it should be Sushma Swaraj," Raut said.
The BJP core group will meet later on Tuesday evening, the first since the appointment of Rajnath Singh as party president. The meeting is likely to discuss preparations for a national council to ratify Rajnath's election as President.
When asked what he thinks about Shiv Sena endorsing Sushma Swaraj as the prime ministerial candidate, Jethmalani said, "It is democracy and they have the right to express their opinion."
