New Delhi: Home Minister P Chidambaram has written to chief ministers of ten states with regard to the NCTC row. Chidambaram wrote to the CMs of Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, in order to address their concerns regarding the anti-terror agency. The National Counter Terrorism Agency was expected to begin operations on March 1. However, the chief ministers of Orissa and West Bengal, Naveen Patnaik and Mamata Banerjee respectively, wrote to the PM, raising objections to it, saying that the anti-terror agency will compromise with the states' powers.
Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to discuss the issue. Singh assured Banerjee that he will have the Home Minister look into the matter and address their concerns.
Chidambaram said on Friday that he had asked the Home Secretary to hold consultations with all the DGPs and heads of anti-terror organisations and added that he will be happy to receive comments from the state governments on the issue.
"The PM has expressed concern. This is an issue of national importance," he added. "All of us are agreed that terrorism is a grave threat to our country which we all have to deal with. Fighting terror is a shared responsibility," he told the protesting chief ministers.
