CPI makes a veiled attack on CPI-M for Nandigram episode, but denies rift.

New Delhi: Internal rift in the Left Front over the Nandigram issue showed up in the open on Wednesday after the CPI made a veiled attack on CPI-M, saying the image of the Left took a severe beating due to the recent happenings in Nandigram. The party, however, reassured that there was 'no crack' in Left unity.

Another Left Front constituent, RSP, has been on the forefront of the attack on its elder partner in West Bengal's Left Front Government over the Nandigram. The party had last week even threatened to pull out its ministers from the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government.

CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta also made it clear in no uncertain terms that his party didn't approve of the 'methods' adopted by CPM in Nandigram.

"We do not agree with the method adopted. It is most unfortunate that such things have happened. The image of the Left has suffered. What should have been done by the state government was done by somebody else," he said.

Dasgupta was referring to 'political workers' recapturing areas from where hundreds of people were evicted by the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Samiti (BUPS) 11 months back.

Dasgupta also admitted that there could be differences within the Left Front, which has been ruling West Bengal. "But there is no crack in the front. We will overcome all the difficulties and continue to fight for the downtrodden unitedly," he said.

He came down heavily on the BUPS, saying "when the state government had assured them in February that no land will be taken (for an SEZ), what was the justification for them to allow armed gangs to roam around freely and threaten the locals."

He said the government, the administration and panchayats were not allowed to function, hundreds were evicted from their hearths and homes for 11 months and even a CPI legislator was beaten up. "How can anyone justify the violence against these people who spent so many months as refugees," he said.
