New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Digital India campaign, Congress took a dig at the government, saying it has "successfully renamed" yet another UPA venture and credited Rajiv Gandhi with turning India into an IT superpower.
The party said, it also hopes that the new programme is successfully implemented and doesn't meet the same fate as the "renamed 'Make in India' scheme did". "The foundation for 'Digital India' was laid by Prime Minister the late Shri Rajiv Gandhi by unleashing the Information Technology (IT) potential of the country that has made India an IT superpower today."
"The former prime minister is even today known and credited for bringing about a new computer, IT and telecom revolution in the country", party's chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala said.
Accusing the government of "successfully renaming" yet another UPA venture, namely National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) as 'Digital India', he hoped it is successfully implemented and doesn't meet the same fate as the renamed 'Make in India' scheme did.
He said the Congress government had approved the NeGP on May 18, 2006, which comprised 27 Mission Mode Projects (MMPs) and 10 components. The vision of the then government in implementing this plan was to, "Make all public services accessible to the common man in his locality, through common service delivery outlets and ensure efficiency, transparency and reliability of such services at affordable costs to realise the basic needs of the common man, he added.
Detailing the progress under the NeGP, he said, Modi will do well to better it if he really wants to take credit for 'Digital India'. "Organising tv events around 'Digital India', like with every other programme cannot be the way forward for such initiatives", he said
