New Delhi: While the the Congress distanced itself from its Mumbai unit chief Janardan Chandurkar's statement that singing legend Lata Mangeshkar's Bharat Ratna should be taken away after she backed BJP leader Narendra Modi for the PM's post, the BJP reacted strongly and asked if the Congress had a copyright on India's top civilian award.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said, "Congress has believed in the freedom of speech. Every individual has the right to say what one feels and demanding to take away one's medal is against the ethics."
The BJP reacted sharply to Chandukar's statement on Bharat Ratna awardee Lata Mangeshkar. Former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said, "Does Congress have the right on Bharat Ratna that it asks to return the award."
Earlier, Chandurkar embarassed the Congress by demanding that the country's highest civilian honours bestowed on those who praise communal forces should be withdrawn.
Although he did not name Lata Mangeshkar but it was quite obvious that he was hinting towards her as she had recently said that she wanted to see Modi become the Prime Minister.
