Bhopal: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is preparing to contest on all 29 Lok Sabha seats of Madhya Pradesh in 2019, putting the plans of a grand opposition alliance in jeopardy.
The announcement was made by BSP vice-president Ramji Gautam, who is in Bhopal to assess the party’s performance in Assembly polls. When asked if this means an end to talks of a grand alliance, Gautam said he was just following orders of BSP supremo Mayawati.
Despite talks of alliance, the Congress and the BSP had failed to seal a coalition ahead of the 2018 assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh.
However, the BSP extended support to Kamal Nath to form a government, saying its aim was to prevent the BJP from coming to power.
Against four seats won in 2013 assembly election, BSP in 2018 assembly polls could only win two seats — one in Bhind and another in Patharia. BSP’s vote share declined from 6.29% in 2013 to only 5.01% in 2018.
Following the poll results, the BSP chief had removed state head Pradip Ahirwar and state in charge Ramachal Rajbhar replacing them with DP Chaudhary and Ramji Gautam, respectively.
