New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders will be meeting for the second day of their national executive Meet on Saturday. The meet is being held to strategise the road ahead for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The slowing economy and tax rationalisation are likely to be the key focus at the two day National Council meet. The BJP is also expected to make the issue of corruption in the UPA regime a big issue. The party will present an alternative governance model in a resolution to be finalised.
During the first day of their meet, BJP today decided to factor in the growing clout of Aam Admi Party in its strategy for the upcoming elections and make Rahul Gandhi its main target of attack along with "failures" of the UPA government.
Addressing the national executive, BJP President Rajnath Singh on Friday refrained from naming AAP but alluded to how Congress may use the growing clout of Arvind Kejriwal's party to spoil their march to victory. The BJP chief said since Congress is aware it is going to "lose" the polls, it is trying every trick in the book to ensure that a "majboor (weak)" government is formed at the Centre.
Singh described UPA government as an NPA - non-performing asset - and said it is time to "write it off". "He said India attained independence in 1947 but now it is time for full independence by making the country free of corruption and unemployment," Javadekar said.
On being aksed if the BJP is making strategies to counter AAP as is being done by Congress, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain sought to club the ruling party and AAP as being on the same side. "Till now, Congress's hand was with aam admi (common man). Now, it is with Aam Admi Party. AAP will be protector of Congress. In Delhi, they have already joined hands,"
Hussain said.
Hussain also added that the BJP was not just against the Congress but against the allies of the ruling party too. "When we talk about the Congress we are equally vigilant about all its allies be it NCP, SP, BSP, or AAP in Delhi, Lalu Prasad (RJD) in Bihar or DMK in Tamil Nadu. We have to fight not just the Congress or its sheilds but also deal with those whose shoulders Congress is using to target others," Hussain said.
BJP is also reportedly concerned about Congress encouraging non-UPA, non-NDA parties to keep the saffron party from forming government in case of a hung Parliament.
The opposition party attacked the Congress on the issue of graft, saying it is stuck in a "swamp of corruption". Incidentally, former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, who had left BJP after he was forced to step down from his post in the wake of corruption charges against him but returned to the party fold recently, also attended the conclave on Friday.
