BJP Lambasts UP Govt Over Alleged Exodus of Hindus from Kairana
BJP leaders accuse the Samajwadi Party government of minority appeasement and corruption in Uttar Pradesh.

The alleged mass exodus of Hindu families from Kairana in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh has given one more potentially explosive and emotive issue to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP president Amit Shah gave the first hint of his party's Uttar Pradesh election campaign pitch on Sunday when he reminded the Samajwadi Party government of the alleged plight of Hindus in Kairana.

"A time will come when everyone will flee UP. As an MP I get 10-15 calls every day with complaints of rape and the alleged involvement of police or the repeated action of UP Police. There is no development and law and order has collapsed in the state," she said.

BJP leaders accuse the Samajwadi Party government of minority appeasement and corruption. According to some BJP leaders over 300 Hindu families have moved out of the Muslim dominated Kairana following multiple reported attacks and charges of extortion.

But local police officials deny the charges made in a report prepared by BJP MP from Kairana Hukam Singh.

"While 68 families did indeed leave Kairana, many of them left as early as 1998. Then 65 families left five years ago. Since these people left Kairana over a period spanning more than a decade, it would be inaccurate to say this was an exodus," Shamli Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan told an English newspaper.

However, Hukam Singh stuck to his charged. "I released a list after taking information from my workers. I have verified that the list is right. Let the district administration also give a list. The state government has failed to maintain law and order in UP. The Samajwadi Party is trying to make it a communal issue," he said.
