Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani got emotional on Tuesday speaking about the Mumbai terror attacks.

Advani was in in Mumbai and spoke about security officials including Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Tukaram Omble who were killed during the terror strikes in November 2008.

"I have come for the first time after 26/11 for this kind of function. I want to pay my tributes to Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar, Unnikrishnan and Tukaram Ombale," said an emotional Advani.

Advani also slammed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government for "playing vote bank politics" when it came to national security.

He alleged that the issue of involvement of Indians in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks is being "hush-hushed" by the Centre and demanded a judicial enquiry into it.

"Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gaffoor had first spoken about the involvement of locals in the terror attack but he was asked to withdraw his statement," Advani said.

Accusing Pakistan of launching a "proxy war" on India, Advani said Mumbai has been attacked thrice - 1993, 2006 and 2008 but the blow was most severe in the 26/11 attacks.

"If the government had anticipated and were aware that there can be a seaborne terror attack, what steps were taken to prevent it? Removing the Chief Minister, deputy Chief Minister and Union Home Minister is not a solution. In fact there should be an enquiry, why these people were not sacked earlier," Advani said.

Advani alleged that the UPA Government was "playing vote bank politics" when it came to national security and cited the examples of Parliament attack convict Mohammed Afzal Guru, whose execution is being delayed and repealing of POTA.

He claimed during National Democratic Alliance's regime in 1998-2004, security agencies were directed to search and "destroy ISI terror modules" without any interference.
