The deteriorating air quality in Delhi has brought stringent curbs, including a ban on the entry of polluting trucks into the city. According to a 2016 report by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, a lot of preventive steps are needed to be taken to bring down the pollution levels in Delhi.

According to a 2016 report, ‘Comprehensive Study on Air Pollution and Green House Gases (GHGs) in Delhi’, here are ten ways to effectively bring down pollution levels.

Stop Use of Coal in Restaurants and Eateries
According to the report, the use of coal, mostly in tandoors in restaurants and hotels is a major source of particulate matter (PM) emissions, a byproduct of coal combustion that can cause lung disease if inhaled. The practice of burning coals must be stopped.
Increase Use of LPG in Houses
Burning of wood, crop residue, cow dung, and coal for cooking must be avoided in households and the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) should be promoted.
Stop Burning of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
Burning of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), which are everyday items like product packaging, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, appliances etc in the open should be stopped. Authorities also need to develop infrastructure for effective collection and disposal of MSW.
Construction Materials and Demolition Sites Must be Covered
According to the report, steps like vertically covering the construction area, and raw materials during on-road movement can improve air quality by 50%.
Promote Use of Windbreakers and Telescopic Chute During Concrete Batching
Concrete batching, the process of mixing materials to form concrete, is another major source of fly ash emissions in Delhi.
Places where concrete batching is done need to use water spray, windbreaker, and telescopic chute (a device that helps to load/unload the free-flowing process material and provide dust-free and safe out-loading of material).
Promote Use of Electric, BS-VI Vehicles
The use of more electric, hybrid and BS-VI vehicles and public transport can contribute significantly to lessen levels of air pollution.
Use of De-SOx-ing and De-NOx-ing Systems at Power Plants
Large power plants and refineries in Delhi emit polluting elements like sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). De-SOx-ing and De-NOx-ing systems, on being installed, remove SO2 and NOx respectively.
Vapour Recovery Systems At Petrol Pumps
Petrol contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that evaporate into the air during the unloading of petrol, which contribute to the formation of smog. Vapour recovery systems help to collect VOCs and curb the emissions.
Lessen Biomass Burning
The report further stresses that the burning of crop residue in Haryana and Punjab needs to stop.
Stop Fly Ash
Measures like water spraying and the installation of windbreakers and plantations can help significantly reduce fly ash in the air.
