On August 19, India is celebrating the auspicious sibling bond with the festival of Raksha Bandhan. While there are many Bollywood films which have shown the relationship between siblings in a beautiful manner, there was one film starring Jackie Shroff, Salman Khan, Ashwini Bhave, Rambha and others. In 1998, with joint efforts, Rajesh Malik and K Murali Mohana Rao released a film titled Bandhan. 26 years, a blockbuster film was released and it beautifully portrayed the relationship of a brother and a sister. Even today people enjoy watching the film which emerged to be a huge success at the box office. The film was headlined by Salman Khan. It also starred Shakti Kapoor, Shweta Menon, Aasif Sheikh, Mukesh Rishi and Himani Shivpuri.
The film saw Salman Khan play the role of Raju while Ashwini Bhave essayed the role of his sister. It centres around how a brother crosses all limits to save his sister’s home. The story narrates the tale of Pooja and Raju (siblings) who fall in love with Thakur Suraj Pratap and his sister Jyoti respectively. However, after marriage when Pooja is unable to conceive a child, she is asked to compromise with her husband’s new mistress or leave the house. Her brother Raju fights for her and decides to reunite her with her husband so that she does not live life as a senior or co-wife.
The film was a great mix of comedy, action and emotion, which the audience loved a lot. There were many scenes which moved the audience. As per reports, right after the release of the film, people queued up outside cinema halls to watch the film. According to Box Office India, 1.07 crore tickets for Salman Khan’s Bandhan were sold. The film was made on a budget of Rs 5.75 crore and earned Rs 21.45 crore worldwide. It turned out to be the 9th highest-grossing film of the year 1998.
