Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, and Diana Penty’s Cocktail hit the screens in 2012 and continues to be a fan favorite. However, Ranbir Kapoor had initially questioned Deepika’s decision to take on the film, advising her that it was “not the right film” for her at the time.
In a 2015 interview with NDTV during the promotions of Tamasha, Deepika was asked if Ranbir had indeed tried to dissuade her from doing Cocktail. The actress confirmed that as she was preparing to leave for London for the shoot, the Ramayana actor expressed concerns, saying it wasn’t the best choice for her career at that point.
Ranbir explained his reservations, noting that Cocktail’s director, Homi Adajania, was a close friend of his who made a certain kind of film. While he didn’t know much about the script, apart from the fact that Imtiaz Ali had written it, he knew that Deepika had other strong offers at the time. “She saw something special about Cocktail that probably I didn’t see. So, I asked her, ‘Why are you doing this film when you had so many good directors waiting to work with you? Why don’t you do their films?’ I think that was solely her choice and her instinct, which was greater than mine. But ya, as a friend, I just asked her, I questioned her,” Ranbir admitted.
When Deepika asked if his opinion changed after watching the film, Ranbir candidly responded that he wasn’t a “big fan of the film” but admired her performance.
Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail follows the story of three friends, with Deepika playing Veronica, Saif Ali Khan as Gautam, and Diana Penty as Meera. The film takes a dramatic turn when Gautam unexpectedly falls for Meera, leading to complications in their friendship.
On the work front, Deepika will next be seen in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, reuniting with her husband Ranveer Singh. The film, starring Ajay Devgn, is slated for a Diwali release on November 1, 2024.
