Prabhas Reveals Kalki 2898 AD Is Made For International Audiences: 'Thats Why It's The Highest Budget'
Prabhas opened up about his upcoming pan-India film Kalki 2898 AD, helmed by Nag Ashwin.

The eagerly awaited sci-fi blockbuster ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is poised to captivate global audiences when it premieres on June 27, 2024. Featuring a remarkable ensemble cast of Indian cinema legends including Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani, the film has already generated significant buzz and anticipation among fans.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Prabhas, set to star in the highly anticipated film Kalki 2898 – AD, revealed that the film is “made for international audiences.” Prabhas stated, “The whole film is made for international audiences. That’s why it’s the highest budget and we’ve got the best actors in the country.” Discussing his title as a pan-Indian star, he added, “We were hearing for the first time people calling me ‘pan-Indian’. That doesn’t really affect me but it’s a good feeling to think that people around the country like me now.”

At the grand Kalki 2898 – AD event on Wednesday, Prabhas was the only main cast member in attendance. The film, set in a dystopian world, features Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan as forces uniting to end the world’s darkness. The event’s photos were shared on social media with the caption, “Rebel Star Prabhas at Bujji x Bhairava event.” ICYMI, here’s what we’re talking about:

Directed by Nag Ashwin, best known for the National Award-winning 2018 biographical drama Mahanati, Kalki 2898 – AD marks the first collaboration between Deepika Padukone and Prabhas. While Deepika and Amitabh Bachchan have previously co-starred in the 2015 film Piku, they will also appear together in the Hindi remake of the Hollywood film The Intern, originally starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.

Previously, Nag Ashwin opened up about the timeline of the film. At the Synapse 2024 event in Gurgaon, Nag Ashwin revealed that the film’s timeline will commence with Mahabharat. He stated, “The film starts with Mahabharat and ends in 2898 AD. It spans 6000 years in time. We tried to create worlds, imagining what they would be like while still keeping it Indian, and not make it look like Blade Runner. The film begins 6000 years behind 2898 AD is 3102 BC, which is when the last avatar of Krishna is believed to have passed.”

The film-maker also clarified that he hasn’t used OpenAI’s Soras, that has become a rage among the netizens to experiment and create scenes. Even though he shared that he’ll try it soon, he explained, “We had to build so many sets, designs, vehicles for this film. It was a lot of process to ideate, conceptualise, build it, prototype, machinery, ageing. Had I used Sora, I wouldn’t need to do this. It could just be a prompt and I wouldn’t need to go for VFX. I am also thinking that, in the process of this struggle, will some magic come through? Because we take months to perfect this, something new could happen. If it’s as easy as a prompt, are you missing something as a creator?”

Produced by Aswini Dutt, the founder of Vyjayanthi Movies, Kalki 2898 – AD will be released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.
