Movie buffs lined up at selected theatres in Chennai on Friday for the screening of Nenjam Marappathillai, the much-awaited horror-thriller starring S J Suryah, Nandita Swetha and Regina Cassandra in lead roles. However, the movie did not live up to the hype, according to a few reactions being shared on social media platforms.
Written and directed by Selvaraghavan, Nenjam Marappathillai had been awaiting its release for the past three years. The production of the movie had started in January 2016 and the shooting was completed by the end of June that year. However, the producers faced some unexpected financial difficulties after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax. The movie faced further delay due to production issues shortly after this surprise and with the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Nenjam Marappathillai faced another unexpected delay.
While some reviews on Twitter are all praise of the movie, others are calling it a complete waste of their money. Movie buff Kaushik LM tweeted that the first half of the movie is “super-engaging” with a middling second half. He further described the movie as dark, lustful drama and regular horror effects, that add to the paranormal flavour of the movie. He commended the actors’ performance and described Surya’s performance as uninhibited while Regina was the driving force of the movie.

God Vs Evil portrayed in the craziest way possible. Not a comfortable watch, but that's where the high is. @selvaraghavan has created a spooky, madcap film called #NenjamMarappathillai
Once in a lifetime role for @Nanditasweta

Another tweet mentioned, how the wait was worth it and commended the screenplay and background music. The tweet said that the movie is one of Surya’s top-notch performances while Nandita and Regina’s roles are also good. The sound engineers were also applauded for the perfect sound mix and the user recommends that people watch the movie only in Dolby Atmos equipped theatres. Music for the movie is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
