Over the last several years, Grey’s Anatomy has seen many changes to its cast. While some actors decided to part ways, some were unexpectedly asked to leave. One of the most shocking departures was that of Sarah Drew, who played the fan-favourite character, April Kepner. In a recent episode of the Call It What It Is podcast, co-hosted by her former co-stars Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington, the actress claimed that her firing in 2018 was “really mean and unjust.”
Despite feeling that her firing was biased, she highlighted that she no longer relies on anyone from the show for her happiness or success. She mentioned she felt empowered to return and share her experiences without the pressure of the past.
Drew explained, “We were unceremoniously let go in a way that felt really mean and unjust, and because of that, the outpouring of love was enormous. It was like you were sitting there watching people say all the things that they love about you.”
Even after leaving the show, Sarah returned to Grey’s Anatomy twice in Seasons 17 and 18. She explained that coming back was a refreshing experience. Drew added that she doesn’t feel any connection to the show. When she was part of the main cast, there was always uncertainty about her character’s future, the conflicts on set and how her storyline would be handled. However, now that she is just visiting, she feels relaxed and has no worries. She doesn’t depend on the show or its team for her happiness or career anymore. This change allows her to enjoy her time on set without any pressure.
When the news about April Kepner’s exit broke in 2018, Drew dropped a statement on X and told her fans, “I know you’re sad. I’m sad too. I haven’t really had the time to process this information. I’ve been with it for less than 48 hours, so I’m not ready to say my thank yous and give an all encompassing statement about my 9 years here. That will come later. For now, I’d like to say: I love you, and I love April, and her story isn’t over yet.”
