Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has opened in the theatres today, May 10. Directed by Wes Ball, the action sci-fi stars Owen Teague and Freya Allen in the lead. Released almost seven years after War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), the fourth installment in the popular film franchise has been receiving positive reviews so far. Earlier, Wes Ball sent movie enthusiasts into a frenzy announcing that “there’s more to" Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. To be precise, he hinted at a trilogy. Here’s how the ending of the first part might pave the way for the other two segments.
The film showcases a kind-hearted chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) and the only speaking human Mae (Freya Allen), joining forces to overthrow the tyrannical rule of Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). The two discover that Caesar and his troops are trying to break open an underground military vault, filled with old-world weapons to enslave humans forever. Although they plan to flood the premises, Caesar captures them. When Noa’s life is threatened, Mae betrays her ape friend and blows up the vault, taking the risk of everyone drowning. Before that, she collects cryptic hardware of utmost importance.
After Mae escapes, the apes also manage to climb out, and with Noa’s call for unity, the other apes ultimately kill Caesar. The ending scene captures an intense conversation between Mae and Noa, where she opines that humans should be at the topmost hierarchy whereas Noa claims that Caesar was right about man being untrustworthy. But in his heart, Noa still believes that apes and humans can co-exist peacefully.
The ending of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes predicts three things for the upcoming sequel. When Mae flees with the hardware, she lands in another human-lived bunker where with the device they try to contact other people to re-establish their authority in the ape-dominated world. Noa, as the leader of the apes and having learned the atrocities imposed upon his species, will be of two minds in the sequel. The final giveaway is Noa and Mae’s cold interaction. With the two at a crossroads now, the future remains uncertain. Another war might just be around the corner.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes also stars Dichen Lachman, William H Macy, Peter Macon, Lydia Peckham and Sara Wiseman in key roles.
