Sophie Turner has finally opened up about her split with ex-husband Joe Jonas. Their divorce was first announced in September last year and it was reported that the actress was made aware of this via news portals. Joe and Sophie’s public divorce also involved a legal battle over their daughters’ custody, making it especially hard for the family. In a recent chat, Sophie opened up about her dynamic with Joe and how she didn’t like being called just Joe’s wife.
Sophie told British Vogue, “There was a lot of attention on the three brothers and the wives. Well, we were always called the wives, and I hated that.” “It was kind of this plus-one feeling. And that’s nothing to do with him – in no way did he make me feel that – it was just that the perception of us was as the groupies in the band,” she added.
While Sophie Turner was married to Joe Jonas, Priyanka Chopra is married to Nick Jonas and Danielle Jonas is married to Kevin Jonas. The three women would often attend the Jonas Brothers concerts across the globe and extend their support to the band, often referring to themselves as the J-sisters.
In the same interview, Sophie opened up about how she felt like that divorce was too hard on her. “There were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it. I would call my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this. I just can’t.’ I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself. And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for. Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them,” Sophie said.
In September 2023, Joe and Sophie released a joint statement to confirm their divorce. “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” their joint statement read. The divorce battle took an ugly turn when they fought over the custody of their children. Several allegations were made like Joe did not tell Sophie about the divorce and that Sophie’s party-girl lifestyle was the reason behind the split. However, the true reason is best known to the former couple, who have two daughters – Willa (4) and Delphine (22 months).
