Expecting 'Bahubali' sequel to be more emotional; viewers will be thrilled by its climax: Rohini
In this exclusive interaction with IBNLive.com, Rohini opens up about the stupendous success of her last big screen outing ‘Bahubali’ and also sheds some light on its sequel

As far as fans of southern cinema are concerned, Rohini is a name that needs no introduction. During her nearly four decade long career she has established herself as a successful actress, filmmaker and lyricist. Moreover, the skilled veteran has also carved a niche for herself as a dubbing artist courtesy her flawless voice modulation in films like ‘Geethanjali’, ‘Raavanan’ and ‘Iruvar’.

In this exclusive interaction with IBNLive.com, Rohini opens up about the stupendous success of her last big screen outing ‘Bahubali’ and also sheds some light on its sequel. Moreover, she also talks about her goals as an artiste and her equation with her son.

What encouraged you to take up ‘Bahubali’?

I was really impressed by SS Rajamouli’s ‘Eega’ hence, wanted to work with him at some stage or the other. On listening to the story of ‘Bahubali’, I liked it a lot. Moreover, I found my character to be quite intriguing. On one hand, she came across as a very courageous/daring woman while on the other there was something truly tender about her. In fact, in some ways, she was like a typical mother and could not bear the suspense surrounding her son’s identity. This paradox made my character a very powerful one even though the screen time wasn’t much.

Why was ‘Bahubali’ able to break the language barrier and become global phenomena?

‘Bahubali’ worked because of the sensitivity with which it was treated. The film’s canvas was huge; however, it remained true to the core emotions concerned. This made it something that was extremely simple at heart. Nearly all the situations came across as quite simple. As such, there was nothing complicated about ‘Bahubali’. Moreover, its characters were etched out extremely well and in detail.

What type of expectations should movie buffs have from ‘Bahubali 2’?

I expect the sequel to be even more emotional than the first part. Its story will really move the audience. Moreover, they will be thrilled by the climax. But most importantly as the makers must have received feedback on the first part, I am sure; they will ensure the sequel is even better than the first part.

Are you happy about the type of recognition you have got as a dubbing artiste?

It is a pretty thankless job and credit is never given. Moreover, the actresses I have dubbed for rarely acknowledge my role in correcting their mistakes. I met Manisha Koirala at the airport once and told her that I had dubbed her voice in ‘Bombay’. She responded with a rushed/awkward “hi” and that was it. That said and done sometimes a few directors like Gautham Vasudev Menon have praised my voice modulation. Moreover, my friend Nasser tells me that Kamal sir (Kamal Haasan) too is fond of my work.

How did your entry in to films come about?

My father wanted to be an actor. Whenever he went to meet directors I would accompany him. One day, by sheer chance, someone spotted me and I got an opportunity to act in a film, making my debut as a child artiste.

Why did you never pursue a full-fledged career in Hindi films?

I did do a Hindi film. It was called ‘Jawani Zindabad’. However, after that, there were no offers from the Hindi industry. That said and done, I am fond of Hindi as a language and would like to learn it properly. This way, I will able to dub my own dialogues.

Who is your pillar of support during difficult times?

The only person I can depend on for support is myself. Moreover, my work also helps me get through difficult times. I believe one has to pick oneself up and get his/her act together before asking for help.

Is your son Rishivaran keen on entering the film industry?

I am extremely passionate about acting. Moreover, my husband (the late Raghuvaran) too loved this profession a lot. However, our son is not interested in acting. He wants to pursue medicine.

What is that one professional goal that you still haven’t been able to fulfill?

As an actress, I am still looking for that one character/role which truly satisfies me as a performer.

Interestingly, even a film like ‘Stri’-for which I got a National award special mention, did not satisfy me. Back then, I felt I had not been able to justice to my part.

What are your upcoming projects?

I have directed a film titled 'Appavin Meesai' which will be produced by Cheran. It features a strong cast comprising Nasser and Nithya Menon and Cheran himself. The movie’s shoot is almost complete only the mixing remains. My aim is to be a good filmmaker and make the type of movies that someone like Hrishikesh Mukerjee made. However, rest assured that acting will not take a backseat.

What's your reaction?
