Celine Song, the talented director behind Past Lives, is back with another exciting project in collaboration with A24. Titled Materialists, this upcoming romantic comedy film is reportedly set in the bustling streets of New York City and centers around a high-end matchmaker who finds herself entangled with a wealthy suitor while she still misses her previous partner. The film is already generating buzz, especially with talks underway to cast A-listers Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans in the lead roles. Returning to work with A24, Killer Films, and 2AM, the same production teams behind her acclaimed debut, Song’s Materialists is set to make another splash in the global film scene.
A24’s reputation for top-notch distribution ensures the movie will reach audiences worldwide, with an anticipated debut at the European Film Market in Berlin. This independent distributor was also behind Past Lives, as well as hits like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Midsommar. It’s also best known for TV shows like Euphoria and Beef.
Following the success of Past Lives, which premiered to critical acclaim at Sundance in 2023, Song has solidified her position as a rising star in the filmmaking world. Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, Past Lives has so far garnered numerous award nominations, including five Golden Globe nods and current consideration for two Academy Awards.
Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler of Killer Films and 2AM’s David Hinojosa will be producing the movie, which Song will direct from a script she herself wrote, reported Deadline. The project is expected to start production soon in the coming months.
Materialists, as per Variety, promises to deliver the same blend of heartwarming romance and sharp wit that audiences loved in Song’s previous work. As anticipation builds and talks continue with potential leads, fans eagerly await the next chapter in Celine Song’s directorial journey.
As for the leading lady of the film, actress Dakota Johnson is gearing up for Madame Web, which also features Sydney Sweeney and is the next installment in the live-action Spider-Man universe.
Meanwhile, director Song is currently looking forward to the 2024 Academy Awards, where her film, Past Lives has been nominated for two Oscars, including best picture and best original screenplay.
