Censorship Makes No Sense: Kay Kay Menon on 'Udta Punjab' Row

Mumbai: Amid the controversy surrounding Anurag Kashyap's 'Udta Punjab', actor Kay Kay Menon has said there should not be any censorship on a film.

Makers of 'Udta Punjab', which deals with the issue of substance abuse in the Northern state, are said to have been asked by the Revising Committee of the Censor Board to remove all references to Punjab and to make 89 cuts.

When asked about it, Menon told reporters here, "I don't like censorship. I don't understand the logic behind it. At the age of 18 you can vote, so you can take the decision of electing a Government at that age, which is far greater decision that watching a film."

The actor was speaking at the trailer launch of his upcoming film, 'San Pachattar' 75'.

The 'Haider' star said censorship should be done away with or at least new criteria should be formed to tackle the issue instead of banning a film.

"I don't know what's the logic behind this. It's foolish. I think it should be done away with. If you want some kind of criteria, of course you can have ratings and elementary stuff which can be stopped at the exhibition stage.

"For example if kids shouldn't watch it, then as far as exhibitor goes, do not allow kids to watch. But because of that you shouldn't control a film, you shouldn't ban it... For me censorship makes no sense," Kay Kay added.

In the early 2000s, Kay Kay starred as a wicked rock musician in Kashyap's debut movie, 'Paanch', which struggled with censorship and has remained unreleased.

Another Kashyap film, in which the actor featured was 'Black Friday' which, too, had to wait many years for a release date.

Asked if the Censor Board has not evolved over the years, the 49-year-old actor said, "Let me not comment further than what I said. But kuch cheezein kabhi sudharti nahi (some things never improve)."

Menon has also appeared in the 'Dev D' helmer's 'Gulaal' and 'Bombay Velvet'.
