This year, Bollywood celebrated dysfunctional families like never before. Bollywood films have always been high on sickeningly sweet traditional families with stereotypical characters. Though Salman Khan’s 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo'-Sooraj Barjatya’s upcoming movie, touted as mother of all family dramas is ready to hit the screen next month. But, the audience were treated to some funny dysfunctional families.
With the routine getting boring, the audience are finding the hackneyed plots revolving around picture perfect, idealistic characters difficult to digest. In contrast, the flawed family consisting of quirky members making no attempt to hide their idiosyncrasies are getting applauded.
Yash Raj Films that were one of the biggest supporters of family movies and celebrated stories high on lovable characters have understood the changing taste of the audience. Y Films, the youth films wing of Yash Raj Films has just launched the trailer to their next web series titled 'Bang Baaja Baaraat'. Taking a break from their fixation for ideal families, the web series will peep into two crazy families consisting of weird members played by Ali Fazal, Rajit Kapoor, Shernaz Patel, Gajraj Rao, Ayesha Raza and Neil Bhoopalam.
A loving mom, doting father, caring brother and a teasing sister was Bollywood's idea of a perfect family for long. The change is a drift from the cosmetic perfection that was mandatory in the Bollywood families. The whacky twist has added a distinct flavor to the plots. Yash Raj’s later presentation Titli, directed by Kanu Behl, and co-produced by Dibakar Banerjee is yet another addition in dysfunctional families of the year:
Titli: The movie narrates the badlands of Delhi's dystopic underbelly, Titli, a rather unusual name for a boy is story of a quirky family. He comes from a family with steady track record of violent car-jacking and brothers prodding him to dedicate his life in the profession. The story explores Titli’s connection with his new wife, who helps him escape his dysfunctional family.
Piku: Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan presented an atypical father-daughter relationship in Shoojit Sircar’s recent movie Piku. Script writer Juhi Chaturvedi presented a different angle of a dedicated daughter and her unique ability to handle her senile father. The movie was a break from melodramatic plots.
Dil Dhadakne Do: Zoya Akhtar’s latest presentation was diametrically opposite to Rajshree patented close families. Unlike the typical filmi-families, that proclaim unconditional love for each other, the members of Mehra family were manipulative and pompous, who celebrated being pompous.
All is Well: Abhishek Bachchan broke the myth of a quintessential dutiful son found in hackneyed Bollywood plots. The movie talks about the ability of a Punjabi boy, who handles the doddery of his parents.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns: Kangana Ranaut as Tanu coming out to meet the guests draped in a towel, KK Raina discussing the plight of a marriage for henpecked husbands with son Manu played by Madhavan and Datto-the Jat athlete fighting societal pressures to win her love were some of the characteristic of the movie that was one of the best examples of Bollywood’s dysfunctional families and relationship.
