Audience Now Just Doesn't Expect Actress to be Male Lead's Love Interest: Manushi Chhillar
Former Miss World Manushi Chhillar says that even the audience now wants to see female actors take on challenging parts rather than just being a showpiece.

Former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, who is gearing up for her Bollywood debut opposite Akshay Kumar in Yash Raj Films’ upcoming production ‘Prithviraj’, says the treatment of women’s roles in the Hindi cinema has come a long way and the female actors are getting better opportunities to explore themselves.

The model-turned-actress also says that even the audience now wants to see female actors take on challenging parts rather than just being a showpiece in the films.

“The kind of movies that are being made today are giving equal opportunities to female leads as well as the male leads. There are a lot of women-centric films that are being made. But more than that even the audience now just doesn’t expect a female actor to come on screen and dance or probably be the male actor’s love interest. Now the audience is seeking more out of the female actors and that is challenging female actors to kind of explore themselves,” Manushi told us at the launch of Adidas’ ‘Watch Us Move’ campaign which aims to celebrate womanhood and their freedom of movement.

Manushi further says that one perception about women that she’d like to change is that there is an urgent need to empower them. The actress rather believes that women are just as powerful as men.

“I think women are empowered and they are strong enough to empower themselves. We have come a long way, thanks to a lot of wonderful women and men who have championed it. But instead of feeling persecuted and that this is a man’s world, women need to really believe in themselves and the power beings that they are and face challenges head on. Women are doing great things. Whenever I see a woman do something great, I feel that inspires me. So, we don’t need women empowerment. There’s definitely a fight for equal opportunities but we have come a long way.”

Talking about the ‘Watch Us Move’ campaign, Manushi says, “Women are always taught to fit into a box and told that this is an image of an ideal woman or this is what a successful woman should be like. I think through life my journey has been more about discovering the fact that you just need to be yourself and believe in yourself. You need to define what a successful woman is to you. And, from childhood, I’ve been a person who has always done what she wanted. So, I love how Adidas is celebrating the freedom of movement.”

Meanwhile, Manushi’s debut film is set to hit the theaters on Diwali this year, where it will clash with Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey. Prithviraj also stars Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood in important roles. It is directed by Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi.
