Ajay Devgn-starrer Maidaan, scheduled to be released tomorrow, faces a legal hurdle as Mysore court has ordered to halt the release over a plagiarism claim by a scriptwriter from Karnataka. The principal district and Session court in Mysore has issued an order prohibiting the release of Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan in response to a script writer Anil Kumar in Mysore, who has alleged that the filmmakers have plagiarised his story.
Anil Kumar has claimed that he had written a story on the Indian football team’s expulsion from the FIFA World Cup in the year 1950 in 2010 and had registered the same story with the Screen writers Association in Bombay under the title Paadanduka. Anil had uploaded the same on his LinkedIn post.
Anil further claims that Sukhdas Suryavanshi, the assistant director of Maidaan, had interacted with Anil Kumar in 2019 and both spoke about the idea of script written by Anil Kumar and had promised Anil to make him meet Amir Khan to produce a movie on the same which didn’t happen.
“In 2010, I started writing the story and in 2018 I posted a poster about this, and I got in contact with Ad director Sukhdas Suryavanshi through my LinkedIn post. He called me to Bombay and asked me to get the script. I have the whole chat history. He told me that he’d make me meet Amir Khan but I couldn’t meet him for certain reasons. I gave him the story and registered the same with the Screen writers Association,” says scriptwriter Anil.
Anil, who recently came across the trailer and the statements, interviews of the filmmakers felt that the story which he had discussed with Sukhdas Suryavanshi was being made into Maidaan.
“Recently, I heard that a movie named Maidaan is getting released, I was surprised because even I have the same story. When I looked at the teaser and their statements, I got to know that it was my story. They have twisted the main story itself and made this movie. I named the story Paadakanduka for three Khans,” adds Anil.
Anil Kumar, with the help of his lawyer Iyanna, moved to Principal district and session court in Mysore to bring a permanent injunction against the release of the movie. The court issued the order on April 8 directing the Zee studios to halt the release of the Bollywood movie.
“Mysore Principal district and session court has stayed the release of the Maidaan movie starring Ajay Devgn, produced by Zee studios and Boney Kapoor which was supposed to be released on April 11. The complaint was filed by story writer Anil Kumar. The story which was registered at Screen writers Association is being misused and being released by Zee studios and the court has ordered to halt the release,” said Iyanna, speaking about the purported plagiarism claim and the court order to prohibit the release of the movie.
Writer Anil Kumar has sent the court order notice to Zee studios, director Amit Sharma, assistant director Sukhdas Suryavanshi along with the script writers of the Maidaan movie to not release the movie. The Mysore principal district and session court has scheduled the next hearing on April 24.
