Warning the Centre against falling into the trap of Sri Lanka, which is trying to wriggle out of accusations of war crimes at the United Nations with India’s help, PMK founder S Ramadoss on Sunday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to avoid meeting Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his upcoming visit and ensure India took a neutral stand in the investigations against the island nation.
The Periodic Review Working Group of the UNHRC is all set to take stock of the human rights situation in Lanka in October, he said. India, he pointed out, has been slated as one of the three countries to undertake this review.
He said that Lanka was trying to scuttle moves to fix any accountability for the human rights excesses during war time with the support of India, which helped dilute the resolution passed against Lanka at the UN in March. “Rajapaksa is visiting India to garner support of the Centre,” he said, adding that if India aided Lanka again, it would be deemed as a nation supportive of war crimes. Hence, all political parties in the State should stand united in ensuring that India remained neutral in the probe against Lanka.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Ramadoss condemned the US government for allowing the release of an “anti-Islam” movie.
